Too Much Unselfishness is a Bad Thing

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.

~ Rick Warren

When we’re developing strengths of culture, can too much ever be a bad thing?

As coaches we often target a strength to develop on our teams, and we can be surprised by the unintended weaknesses that appear as a result. We’ve seen this play out recently with many teams we work with who are targeting unselfishness. This overemphasis on unselfishness has actually resulted in sheepishness—a lack of confidence, ferociousness, and bold instinct.

If we are developing a spirit of greatness in our team, we are not simply looking for either selfish or unselfish; we are looking for both unselfish and magnanimous. What we really want is beyond unselfishness—it’s the confidence and courage that is cultivated in a culture of magnanimity. Magnanimous team members have great spirits, big hearts, and do not diminish others or themselves!

We continue our exploration of selfishness, unselfishness, and magnanimity in pursuit of a Spirit of Greatness on our team.
